Turn the letter a quarter-turn and the vowel changes. One shape, four syllables — and nothing to memorise but the turn.

§1 of 5The Brief
James Evans was a Wesleyan Methodist missionary, English by birth, working at Norway House on Lake Winnipeg in the territory the Hudson's Bay Company called Rupert's Land. His brief was the missionary's standard one: get scripture and hymns into the hands of Cree speakers, and get them read.
He had already tried the obvious route. Evans had worked on Ojibwe with the Latin alphabet and knew what it cost — an orthography full of digraphs and diacritics, taught through schooling, in a script whose logic had to be learned before it could be used. Across a territory of scattered communities reachable by canoe in summer and dog-sled in winter, with no schools and no teachers, an alphabet that took a year to learn was not a delivery mechanism.
So the brief tightened into something more specific than "write Cree." It was: devise something a Cree speaker can learn in an afternoon from another Cree speaker, with no classroom, and that can be printed on equipment that does not exist yet in a place with no supply chain.
§2 of 5The Constraints
The linguistic constraint was generous. Cree is an Algonquian language with a small vowel inventory — four basic vowel qualities, with length — and a syllable structure that is predominantly consonant-plus-vowel. A system organised around consonant-vowel pairs fits it almost exactly.
The material constraints were the memorable ones, and they are unusual in this series because they were constraints on manufacture rather than on language. There was no type, no press, no paper supply and no ink. Evans cast type from lead salvaged from tea-chest linings, made ink from soot and fish oil, pressed on an improvised press with a jack from a fur press, and printed on birchbark before paper could be got.
A design that must be cut by hand from tea-chest lead cannot afford a large character set. The economy of the system is a manufacturing constraint made visible.
That is the constraint that explains the design. A syllabary on the Cherokee or Vai model would need eighty to two hundred distinct sorts, each cut individually. A system where one shape serves four syllables needs a quarter of that.
§3 of 5The Decisions
The central decision is the one that gives the chapter its title, and it is the most elegant single mechanism in this building. Each consonant gets one shape. The vowel is written by rotating that shape: the same character turned to face up, down, left or right gives four different syllables. ᐁ ᐃ ᐄ ᐊ are not four things to learn; they are one thing and a rule.
This makes the system featural — the visual form encodes the phonological structure rather than being an arbitrary label — which places it in a very small class. Hangul is the other famous member, and the two arrived at the property by different routes: Sejong's shapes diagram the organs of speech, Evans's orientation encodes the vowel. Both make the writing system partly self-teaching, and both cut the memory load to a fraction of a syllabary's.
The second decision handles what the rotation cannot. Syllable-final consonants are written with small raised characters — the "finals" — sitting outside the rotation scheme. Vowel length is marked with a dot. Both are additions to a core that stays regular.
The third decision was the shapes themselves, taken from Pitman shorthand and from geometric primitives, chosen for being easy to distinguish, easy to cut and easy to write by hand.
§4 of 5The Adoption Curve
The curve is the steepest in the series and it is steep for the reason the design predicts: acquisition was measured in days, and the system propagated person to person without institutions. Contemporary accounts describe near-universal literacy in some Cree communities within a decade of the script's appearance — spread, crucially, by Cree speakers teaching other Cree speakers, not by the mission.
It then did something no other script in this series did: it moved between unrelated languages under its own momentum. Syllabics were adapted for Ojibwe, Naskapi, Blackfoot and — most consequentially — for Inuktitut, which is not an Algonquian language at all and belongs to an entirely separate family. That adaptation is now the writing system of a territory: Inuktut syllabics are in official use in Nunavut, on its legislature, its signage and its schooling.
And the ownership moved. Syllabics arrived as a missionary instrument and became a marker of Indigenous identity, maintained by Indigenous institutions and standardised by Indigenous bodies. That transfer is rare and it is the strongest fact in the chapter — see the Conservation Department for how it sits against the other revival and retention cases.
§5 of 5The Verdict
The design deserves the credit the design can carry: rotation is a genuinely superior mechanism for a language shaped like Cree, and the adoption curve is what a low-memory-load, self-teaching system looks like when it meets a population that wants it.
But the authorship is contested and this institute does not resolve it. The written record is missionary and credits Evans; the Hudson's Bay and Wesleyan correspondence is his. Cree oral tradition holds that the syllabary was revealed to Mistanâkôwêw — Calling Badger — of the Plains Cree, and there is a well-founded scholarly position that Evans worked with Cree collaborators whose contribution the missionary record does not name, which is exactly what that kind of record habitually fails to do. The two accounts are not straightforwardly reconcilable, and the surviving evidence is asymmetric in the way that always favours the party who wrote things down.
What can be said without picking a side: the system fits Cree phonology closely enough that its designer, whoever held the pen, had a working analysis of Cree; the spread was carried by Cree speakers; and the script's continued life is the work of the communities that adopted it. Attributing the whole to one English missionary requires ignoring all three.
