Curatorial note

The most striking thing about Burmese writing is its roundness — a page of it looks like a row of circles. That shape has a practical root: the script was written on dried palm leaves, and straight strokes cut along the grain would split the leaf, so the letters were drawn as curves.

Beneath the curves it is a standard Brahmic abugida — an inherent vowel carried by every consonant, vowel signs written above, below, before and after, and stacked medials. Structurally it is a cousin of the scripts of India and mainland Southeast Asia, descended through the Pyu and Mon writing of the region.

The same code points, two incompatible meanings — a script briefly at war with its own encoding.

But Myanmar carries a modern cautionary tale the institute returns to often: the "Zawgyi" font. For years, most Burmese computing used Zawgyi, a font that occupied the Unicode code points for Myanmar but mapped them wrongly — so Zawgyi text and proper Unicode text were mutually unreadable, and the same bytes meant different things on different phones. Myanmar has been migrating to true Unicode since around 2019, but the split left years of mojibake behind it. The script's place in the family tree is shown in the descent diagram.

A rounded abugida, and an encoding schism

The round forms are a palm-leaf adaptation: cut on the grain of a dried leaf, a straight stroke splits it, so the scribes drew loops and curves instead. Underneath, the mechanics are those of any abugida — a consonant carries an inherent vowel, and a written vowel sign changes it, sitting above, below, before or after the letter.

မြန်မာ Correctly encoded Unicode — the same code points Zawgyi repurposed. Zawgyi and Unicode both occupied the Myanmar code block but assigned its code points differently, so identical bytes rendered as entirely different text depending on which system read them.
